PUBLIC WORKS SUPERVISOR
STARTING SALARY: COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE
ROUTINE HOURS: 40 hours per week - Monday thru Friday 8 AM to 4:30 PM Hours may be distributed differently within the week as need arises, with approval from the Town Manager.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Public Works Supervisor reports under the direction of the Town Manager and supervises, plans, organizes and coordinates all aspects of the town’s public works department, which may include property and buildings, vehicles, streets, water, sewer, and planning.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for the supervision of the public works department staff and the operation, maintenance and repair of town owned buildings, vehicles, grounds and parks and infrastructure; including streets and the water and sewer distribution system. Employee needs to pursue education and experience in water distribution and in waste water collection and obtain State required certifications.
- Organization, supervision and training of the public works staff.
- Supervision of construction projects, inspecting work for accuracy and effectiveness, coordinating with staff, contractors, engineers, etc.
- Respond to emergencies/breakdowns.
- Plans, organizes, coordinates and directs maintenance and construction projects, i.e., storage tanks, pump houses, storm drain systems, distribution and collection lines and lift stations.
- Assess and monitor the town’s infrastructure to provide adequate levels of public service both for existing systems/networks and extensions/developments
- Prepares annual proposal for Street Repairs and Overlays.
- Coordinates and implements required protocol to address emergency weather related conditions; snow, heavy rains, etc. in conjunction with the Town Manager.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Construction techniques involving streets and roads, drainage systems, flood control and sanitary sewers.
- Principles and procedures of facility maintenance.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards involved in the Public Works Department and appropriate safety precautions, standards and regulations.
- Determine the feasibility of various municipal projects.
- Coordinate design, construction, inspection, and maintenance activities for a variety of projects.
- Identify and respond to community issues, concerns and needs.
- Management skills and team building.
- Knowledge of operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of Public Works vehicles, equipment, and heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of methods, tools and materials used in structure maintenance and repair.
- Ability to work effectively with other employees and the public.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: Minimum qualifications include high school graduate or GED equivalent. Experience in water and sewer preferred. Leadership qualifications a must. Knowledge and skills in Public Works operations and procedures.
