As part of Engineering Online, NC State’s site-based Mechanical Engineering Systems BSE Program is located on the campus of Craven Community College in Havelock, NC. Students receive Mechanical Engineering courses from the Raleigh campus through live interactive video, and on-site NC State faculty teach the eight MES courses. The program admits approximately twenty students each year and offers them a mentoring environment in which to grow their knowledge of engineering theory and practice. The Position:
The North Carolina State University site-based Mechanical Engineering Systems BSE Program invites applications for a non-tenure-track administrative position focused on the MES laboratory courses. Candidates will be expected to fully contribute to the department’s mission by setting up, conducting, and grading all MES Labs; assisting students with mechanical engineering-oriented questions from courses and projects; assisting students with MES equipment; maintaining all MES equipment; improving and developing new laboratory experiences to reinforce key mechanical engineering concepts best and contribute to the integrated MES curriculum.
The Laboratory Coordinator will work closely with the MES Program Director and coordinate with faculty from NC State’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) in coordination with the mechanical engineering classes offered at the site. This position is located on the campus of Craven Community College in Havelock, NC and will report directly to the Director of the Site-Based Program in Havelock.
Specifically, the duties of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Set up, conduct, and grade all MES labs
- Assist students with MES equipment, including training and safety issues
- Assist students as needed with questions about the mechanical engineering subjects and help students with the application of theory to engineering projects and lab exercises
- Maintain MES equipment and keep up-to-date with changes and new technology that could be used to create a better learning experience for the students
- Perform any needed equipment modifications or upgrades
- Work cooperatively with the administration and staff of Craven Community College, Havelock campus, where the program is housed
- Participate in ABET Continuous Improvement Process
Other possible duties of this position may include but are not limited to:
- Help with student groups, supervise student workers, and in the ordering of supplies as needed
- Attend special college meetings at NC State with MAE faculty, lab coordinators or administrators
- Visit high schools for recruiting purposes
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will possess the following:
Required Qualifications
- MS degree in mechanical engineering or related area
- Ability to communicate clearly and distinctly in verbal and written communications
- Ability to work as a member of a team and independently
- Must possess excellent management and organizational skills in the use of time and resources
- Must be willing to travel to Raleigh and to high schools and/or community colleges for recruiting purposes
Preferred Qualifications
- A demonstrated track record of mentoring, teaching, and problem solving
- Experience in engineering practice (industry or government)
- Familiarity with LabView, MatLab, Simulink, and graphical statistical analysis
- Ability to translate theoretical concepts into practical usage
- Experience with digital design tools such as Solid Modeling, 3-D printing, and scanning
- Experience directing labs and projects
- Experience teaching at the undergraduate level
