Mechanic
Charter Township of Clinton Department of Public Services, Water & Sewer Division Mechanic Permanent full-time Mechanic position $52,187 - $60,611 annually 40 hours per week includes benefits package. Successful completion of Civil Service Examination is required and applicants must meet all requirements set forth in the Employees Civil Service Ordinance. Pre-employment background investigation and substance abuse testing is required.
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Director of Public Services, Assistant Superintendent of Water and/or Motor Pool Supervisor performs an extensive range of mechanical maintenance and repair activities on all Township equipment and vehicles. Performs related work as required.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is responsible for diagnosing malfunctions and performing repairs; rebuilding and/or replacing engines, power train components, major hydraulic components, and steering components; electronic control diagnosis; as well as maintenance work and repairs on brake shoes, hydraulic cylinders, air brake chambers, valves, carburetors, alternators, starters, distributors, generators, and solenoids. Also installs new or existing equipment for seasonal use, items such as snowplow frames, sanders, underbody scrapers, and wiring. May use welding equipment and brazing equipment to fabricate new or repair old equipment. Also, makes service calls.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
This position requires maintaining accurate records of materials used for repairs. Applicants must possess the ability to read and interpret service manuals and diagrams as well as understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and effectively communicate. Also, must be able to work effectively alone or as a member of a team with minimal supervision and independently schedule workload and prioritize assignments.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in vocational technology. Two years of experience with automotive mechanical repairs is preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Class B Commercial Driver ‘s License (CDL) and obtain three Mechanic State Certifications within fifteen months upon promotion. Also, must obtain Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Waterworks System Operator S-4 license. Successful completion of a Civil Service Examination is required, and applicants must meet all requirements set forth in the Employees Civil Service Ordinance
